Summer is a time to kick back and relax. How about adding reading and relaxing to the mix? What better time than during the lazy dog days of summer to catch up with the story or novel you’ve heard about that you want to check out yourself. Making memories with young readers by doing shared reading provides a great model for them, and builds shared memories. How about revisiting favorite stories from childhood, like Pinocchio or Corduroy? Nowadays, the kids like adventure tales like the Magic School Bus series. How about taking an adventure with Ms. Frizzle on a magic carpet school bus? Taking turns reading with them or reading with shared voices together. Why not take the kiddoes to the park when they have their summer concerts and read with them, as in these pictures? Coordinated by the Recreation Department, volunteers from the city teenage service and social program called VOLT (Volunteer Opportunities and Leisure for Teens), parents, and others came to partner with children to read with them. These photos were taken at Boisserance Park in Buena Park, CA, with free books provided by Think Together, an organization which organizes and administers out-of-school programs for students. For more information about their programs, visit http://www.thinktogether.org/ By the way, their moniker “THINK” stands for Teaching, Helping, Inspiring and Nurturing Kids.
